BRUSSELS – Despite its complicated rules, Belgium topped the European rankings for its success in recycling glass. According to a new study by FEVE, the European Container Glass Federation, Belgium recycled 96.34% of its glass containers in 2009.
The Netherlands (91.80%), Sweden (90.36%), Austria (90.29%) and Denmark ( 88%) all received high marks from FEVE, which reminds the world that the use of recycled glass in production processes reduces society's dependence on raw materials, energy consumption – and lowers CO2 emissions.
The European average was 67%. Greece came in last place, recycling only 15%.
(*Less than a third of glass is recycled in the United States).
